A Weekend off – Yurt-ing in Big Sur

I thought I knew what a yurt was: a place where hippies lived in blissful green-ness. Sounded nice, but I never thought of staying in one. But, after a year with my BF² — Boy Friend and Best Friend (a twofer!) — I found myself on the back of his moto, carving the twisties of Highway 1, up the glorious Central California Coastline. And, where did we end up? An idyllic bluff, peppered with, you guessed it, yurts.

Yurting in Big Sur

The Eco-Friendly resort, Treebones, offers camp sites (Brave souls! It’s cold this time of year!), or yurts (yes, please!). A place of understated luxury, with a million dollar view of the Pacific Ocean and the whales that hug its shores. A menu, built on organic ingredients, harvested from their on-site vegetable garden. A sushi bar (gasp!), stocked with the freshest of seafood!

Yurting in Big Sur

Hillsides, laced with more hiking trails than there are strands in your Grandmother’s doilies. A jacuzzi and pool (no I didn’t… brrr!), ready to wake you up, or lull you to sleep. And, for the truly winged spirits, a hand-made nest, complete with a mattress for a night’s sleep under the stars (pray for clear skies!).

Yurting in Big Sur

And as I picked up a linguine stir-stick the next morning for my tea (Starbucks, take note!), I looked at my smidge of hippie BF² , and thought, “ahhhh, blissful green-ness”. Next time, we’re in the Nest!

Our Date with The Elephants – Kenya

adopt an elephant

A journey to Kenya might seem like the trip of a life-time, but being Kenyan born, it has been a place where I have often returned.  A regular article found in my bag, is a can of condensed milk.  Not for me, or my long-time friends and family who still live there, but for elephant calves at the Sheldrick Orphanage in Nairobi.  Established in 1977 by Dame Daphne Sheldrick, the orphanage rescues, rehabilitates, and returns to the wild, elephant calves from all over Kenya.

These calves have been orphaned due to poaching, and inadvertent run-ins with humanity, such as falling in wells.  Over the years, I have “fostered” many of these orphans, and have watched them with the general public, as they are escorted back in after a long day of grazing, to receive a bottle of condensed milk.

But this year, aside from having the pleasure of bringing my boyfriend “home” with me, to visit my native land, we had the great honor of a private “backstage” tour at Sheldrick, walking with the elephants, and their individual keepers, through the surrounding Acacia groves.

Seeing the commitment of the keepers, who live with them 24 hours a day (and even sleep in the stalls with their assigned calves), birthed a commitment from my boyfriend, and cemented my own, to support the calves and their keepers.  While the fight to protect the Kenyan wild-life from the evils of poaching, and from the ever encroaching environs of modernity, might seem so difficult, getting involved has never been easier.  For a small donation of $50.00, an elephant or rhinoceros calf can be fostered, by visiting www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org.  While my boyfriend and I plan on returning regularly to Kenya, this time around, it truly was, the trip of a life-time.

Loving Lucian Freud

If you’re lucky enough to be in London before May 27th, you must visit the Lucian Freud Exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery. The collection, a study in the evolution of his technique, features 130 remarkable works of art focusing on the people in Freud’s life over his 70 year career. From his many lovers to sitters, friends and family (he had 15 children and some claim he had even more). Although Lucian Freud died last year, his life through his art has never looked more vibrant and fresh.

Notes from a buyer- A day off in Paris

A day off in Paris - Caroline Diani

1. & 2. Breakfast: pain au chocolat at Paul and pads of lilies at Monet’s exhibit at L’Orangerie.

3. Mid Morning snack: Have a smooch with the statue outside (don’t tell your boyfriend).

A day off in Paris - Caroline Diani
4. – 6. Lunch: The French don’t lunch, they walk. With all that cheese, how do you think they stay so skinny? So, hoof it to Square du Vert Galant, then over to Notre Dame, and end in awe, staring at the stained glass of La Sainte-Chapelle.

7. & 8. Afternoon Snack: Amorino dark chocolate gelato, followed by getting your nose stuck into some Shakespeare (don’t tell Moliere) at the old bookstore near the Pont Neuf.
9. Dinner: Escargots (don’t tell your trainer) and then walk it off up the Eiffel Tower (tell your trainer).
10. And, like I’ll always say, don’t forget to stop and smell the flowers.

11. Ps: See if you can find some Invader graffiti.

Anya Hindmarch at Paris Fashion Week

diani living

Anya Hindmarch just had her first ever show and true to form, it was inspired and cheeky.  The set was concocted with one part Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and one part Father Christmas’s toy factory. The catwalk was replaced with a conveyor belt that snaked through the set, like the pathway on a Candyland game board.  But in place of trinkets and cellophane wrapped lollies, clutches opened and closed like oysters, and shoes magically danced about, of their own volition.  While an occasional cabinet opened to reveal handbags with tassels twirling, some handbags were carried aloft by balloons, and others spun on ferris wheels.  And as the lights of this delightful carnival began to dim, Anya was revealed on a bicycle, as the woman behind the curtain, using pedal power to bring the whole event to life.

DIANI Living

And amid a cascade of confetti and candy, she led, like a pied piper, a veritable who’s who of Fashion Cognoscenti, into a cocktail party, where champagne and special boxes of Anya Quality Treats were gifted.  All in all, it was a dazzling debut… a perfect chapter written by Ms. Hindmarch, in the fairy tale known as Paris Fashion Week.

Anya Hindmarch Fall Collection available at DIANI Boutique from June 2012. To view the current Spring/Summer Collection from Anya Hindmarch visit DIANI Boutique.
