Flashback Friday – Ireland

There are so many words that come to mind when I think of Ireland: lush, wet, breathtakingly beautiful, disarming, historic, real, edgy, political, troubled. And, whether you’re in Northern Ireland or in the Republic, there is a raw truth that makes you see the humanity on both sides of all the things we’ve read about for years. The people we met personify salt of the earth and, without exception, I felt like what you see is what you get. Oh, and the music and the joy and the laughter. If you ever need a dose of that, the Irish will teach you in spades.

Layering with Graphics

As a buyer and boutique owner, I’m always aware of the latest trends.  Discovering a new designer, or a ground breaking style is part of the excitement with what I get to do on a daily basis. But it’s not always about the latest trend. It’s good to keep the classics in rotation. And, one of the classics that never goes out of style, is a graphic t-shirt and a pair of jeans. And, the best part is, whether you’re in school, or picking your kids up from school, this classic can be tailored to fit your station in life. For me, layering a graphic tee with some heels, a leather jacket and a chunky necklace, gives me the effortless pulled together feel I always love. Oh, graphic tee… how I will always love thee!

Flashback Friday – A Place in the Sun

There’s nothing better than getting to go back to my birthplace, Kenya as often as I can and the Masai Mara is one of my favorite places in the world. Here are some of my treasured moments on a safari last year.

Masaii Mara

The place we like to go on safari literally has no one as far as the eye can see. It feels like going back in time to when we would safari as a family.

Flashback Friday – France

From Sud to Nord, Bateaux to Chateaux, I spent a summer a couple of years ago celebrating a friend’s birthday in Saint Tropez and then hired a car and drove myself to Paris, spending nights along the way at places that drew me in. Here is a smattering of memories caught on camera.

Milking White

As the idea that fall is just around the corner sinks in, I’ve decided that I’m going to wear white as much as I can until then. Not that I ascribe to the no-white-after-Labor-Day rule, I just got so into head-to-toe white around my wedding when I had showers and dinners to go to. White is such a universally flattering color and now is a good time to milk it while the days are still long.

Love For Loeffler

I’m a huge fan of the shoe designer, Jessie Randall and her brand, Loeffler Randall. She always produces refined and elegant shoes, but what she does so well is add her now signature downtown cool yet feminine edge. I’ve been dying for her fall collection to arrive so I can be reunited with some of my faves from the showroom. I’ll be wearing these flats all fall with skinnies and cashmere sweaters.

Loeffler Randall Shoes

Meet Beatriz. Available at DIANI. A distinct 60’s Beatles vibe and the gold and black combo is a trend I’m loving. Just arrived! Shop here.

Flashback Friday

The hubby and I are starting to plan our honeymoon and whilst we’re picking a place that neither of us have been, we’ve been reminiscing about previous trips we’ve had together. Here’s some snap shots of a place I know very well and loved sharing with my man.

Watamu, Kenya

Palapa Edited SM

Our favorite lounging spot by the pool at our house on the beach.

If only you could smell this flower.

IMG_2636

Hard to believe that at some times during the day, the ocean was too warm, so the pool was the more refreshing option to cool down.

IMG_2717

Tusker Edited SM

The hubby’s go-to refreshment, the local beer – Tusker.

IMG_2648

The local fishermen came by our house every day with whatever we’d requested the day before. Freshly caught and delicious.

So many fish! It’s like swimming in an aquarium at your dentist’s office.

CD and JD Edited

The best way to get around is in a tuc-tuc. Very bumpy and very slow, but always very entertaining.

IMG_2746

The only thing you feel like wearing other than a bathing suit. Kikoys! Men wrap around and wear them as skirt, women tie them up around their neck, to make a dress. I’ve accumulated hundreds over the years because of their amazing colors and uses.

The Bathroom Diary

I can’t think of anything more decadent than soaking in a bath tub full of bubbles, sipping a glass of wine and delving into a good book. If I had the time, I would spend a lot more time in my bathroom. Here are some details from one of the bathrooms in our home.

Bathroom

Carved wood box from Kenya, handed down to me from my parents.

Bathroom

I found an old park bench in a dumpster and used the wood to make a sink counter. You can never have too many candles (Diptyque) or fresh flowers in a bathroom. Juliska ring holder (from Upstairs at Pierre Lafond).

Bathroom

Philippe Starck faucet. I love mixing old and new, modern and vintage.

Bathroom

An antique Indian window frame which we turned into a mirror.

Bathroom

Our claw foot tub makes me think of England and a cottage I grew up in.

Bathroom

Trusty Havaianas. Get a pair at DIANI here.

Bathroom

Stacks of fluffy white towels.

Bathroom

Old bathroom prints by Newcastle artist, Robert Olley. See more here. Glass balls hand blown at Kitengela Glass – Nairobi, Kenya.

Bathroom

Bath salts in a Juliska bowl (Upstairs at Pierre Lafond) and Jo Malone Red Roses scent candle.

Bathroom

A photograph by my incredibly talented hubby. It’s called, “Running On Empty” and was taken in Watamu, Kenya. See more of his work here.

Bathroom

Masaii beading.

Bathroom

Bathroom

The “Essentials” shelf. Pretty much all I need to get by when in a hurry.

Bathroom

You can never have too many shower heads.

Over The Rainbow for Mother Denim

It takes a lot sometimes to get into wearing color on the bottom, especially if it’s print, but there’s something about Mother denim’s cords in Rain Cloud that makes me see rainbows. The print is flattering and a perfect mix of subtle and striking. Pair them with a clean white shirt or your favorite crisp tee or dress them up with a tailored jacket or cozy cashmere sweater and pumps.

Weekend Sneakers

I have a sneaker weakness. Golden Goose sneaker weakness to be exact. My collection of their Slides is growing and I’m justifying it because I literally wear them every weekend. There is nothing more comfortable than throwing on a pair with your favorite T and sweats. Not only are they super chic, but they have a hidden lift in them which makes them impossibly comfortable.

I’m a fan of muted colors, in part cause it allows me to get a little more crazy with my accessories. This look is perfect for a dinner date with the hubby or cocktails with the girls. Fiesta Libations

Two of my favorite things are tequila and guacamole. For this very reason, I love Fiesta! It’s a time to indulge, guilt-free in the festivities. Here are two of my favorite tequila cocktails. I like a stiff drink, so if they’re a little strong, add a splash of French lemonade (Trader Joe’s has a good one) to the Dianirita and extra soda to the Tejito.

Check out my favorite guacamole recipe from an older post I wrote last year during Fiesta here.

Fiesta Cocktail

Fiesta Cocktail

THE DIANIRITA

SERVES 2

Ingredients

3 oz tequila blanco (Patron Silver)
1.5 oz freshly squeezed lime juice

Directions

Mix ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Stir rather than shake. Pour over ice in a salt rimmed glass. Add a slice of lime to the edge of the glass for a decorative touch.

Fiesta Cocktail

THE TEJITO

(tequila version of a Mojito)

SERVES 2

Ingredients

4 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
2 tablespoons sugar
6-8 fresh mint sprigs
4 oz tequila blanco (Patron Silver)
Soda water if desired

Directions

Combine the lime juice, sugar and leaves from 2 mint sprigs in a tumbler glass. Mash with the back of a wooden spoon until the mint starts to break apart. Add the ice and tequila. Top off with soda water if desired. Garnish with the remaining mint sprigs.
