Small Business Saturday! Tomorrow!

Shop Small

Small Business Saturday is tomorrow and, as we all rev up our engines and head out for the best deals and check off our holiday gifts list, I like to support the locally owned, independent stores in my town. The local book store, wine shop, clothing boutiques, home store, apothecary boutique, juice bar, patisserie, skincare spa..the list goes on. It feels good on so many levels. I know the owners, I know the people who work there everyday and how dedicated they are. I know their history, so I’m invested and they’re invested in their community.

As a small business owner, I want to thank you all for the support you have shown me. It means everything, knowing that you have so many choices and you choose to shop small and local. When you support a local business, that business, in turn supports local businesses, from suppliers, to maintenance personnel, to accountants and everything in-between. Because, not only does supporting independent businesses make a thriving local economy, it makes one’s town a better place to live, work and visit. In return for that love and support, I, like other local business owners, are also committed to supporting local non-profits and schools. So, if you want to help your town develop a unique and special fingerprint, shop locally. Small is beautiful.

Caroline xoxo

Some of the places I like to shop:

Chaucer’s, Wine Grotto, Botanik, Upstairs at Pierre LafondTreat, C’est Cheese, Renaud’s Bakery, Juice Ranch, Skin Resolutions and, yes, DIANI.

Simple Evening Gathering

I think this Brit is finally getting the hang of this Thanksgiving holiday thing. I love that we take the time to gather with friends and family and feast together. It feels so nurturing. We’ll be making turkey with friends tomorrow and, although I don’t eat meat, I’ve been discovering some amazing vegetable dishes on Pinterest. For the recipes click here and here. In The Band

Smythe Band Jacket

Calling all you jacket lovers. If you haven’t heard of Smythe, consider yourself in the know now. Take it from me, their jackets are not only the coolest, but they fit like a dream and are always so versatile. This Band jacket looks great with jeans, drop-crotch dressy sweats, a long pencil skirt and even a long full skirt. And, the gold braided detailing is calling the holidays.

Flats and Flares

Louise Flats

If you’re not quite ready for the full bell flares that are coming back (don’t worry, skinnies aren’t going anywhere), I’ve found the perfect jean for you by Mother. It has the fit and stretch that we expect in our denim and, from the knee, subtly flares out. Some may call this a stiletto cut. They look amazing with heels, boots, wedges and, best of all, flats! I’m crazy about these new pony hair flats by Pantofola d’Oro. They’re cozy and comfy and perfect for a long day in the kitchen this Thanksgiving.

Morocco Part 2 – Dar Ahlam

Dar Ahlam

When we decided to go to Morocco for our honeymoon, we knew we wanted to go to Marrakech for starters, but didn’t know where to go from there. It seemed we had two options. One, head towards the coast, or, two, head towards the Sahara. Knowing that the Moroccan coast is unlike the West Coast where we live, we still felt like the Sahara would offer a much different experience than we were used to. So, we headed East out of Marrakech, and crossed the Atlas Mountains over the Tichka Pass, which was an adventure in and of itself. We then headed through Ouarzazate, the center of Morocco’s significant film industry, and over to Skoura. Skoura sits in the middle of a large oasis, filled with palms, and ancient Kasbahs. In the middle of all the magic, is Dar Ahlam. An oasis within an oasis. A place with only nine rooms and three villas, al fresco dining, and each personally prepared meal being served at a different location throughout the property. It was truly outrageous, and an incredible experience. If you get the chance, go there!

Black and Golden Bootie Beauty

Loeffler Randall Reese Booties

When I was very young, my mother introduced me to gold jewelry and it’s been my metal of choice ever since. More recently, I’ve been using this hue in clothing to break up neutrals and add dimension. Loeffler Randall is one of my all time favorite shoes designers and, although I already own her black and gold Beatriz oxford flat, there are certain outfits that call for a bootie, especially with a kitten heel. Her Reese bootie is perfect for adding a festive spice to any outfit.

Nowles November

Nowles Boots

When Isabel Marant’s Nowles boots arrived in August, I wanted to wear them right out the door! Ever since seeing them in the showroom in Paris, I had been dreaming about their arrival. Unfortunately, the weather was so beautiful, I couldn’t justify slipping my feet into a cozy shearling lined boot. So, reluctantly I tucked them back in their box and tried to forget about them until the weather cooled. As the days turned into weeks, and the weeks turned into months, the sun kept shining and it seemed like I would never see the day when I could unpack them. But, finally, the day is here! Living in a canyon can get chilly, and it’s now chilly enough for me to justify tucking my feet into these cozy beauties. And, I’m heading to NYC in a couple of weeks, so they’ll definitely be in the bag! Oh, and did I mention, they have a hidden wedge? The perfect winter boot just got even more perfect.

Gold Redone

Gold redone 4 Edited

I featured this Sam&Lavi gold skirt, my favorite Golden Goose booties and Mason swing cardigan last week on my blog and had so much fun wearing the look that I wore it to work a few too many days in a row.  I wanted to figure out a way to dress it up a little and wear it out to a casual dinner party. Enter the perfect snuggly ivory sweater by no other than Isabel Marant, a simple black pump and an easy grab-n-go clutch by Anya Hindmarch and I was set for an intimate fireside gathering with friends.

Morocco Part 1 – Marrakech

Morocco

My husband and I recently took our honeymoon in Morocco and I don’t think either one of us were quite prepared for how much we would fall in love with the country. We spent just under two weeks there and, thanks to my amazing friend, Claire Eastwood and her expertise in luxury bespoke travel. In collaboration with The Smart Flyer, she set us up with a local guide who took us to several towns and areas we had wanted to visit. First on our agenda was Marrakech. The 14th century streets and alleyways of the Medina are packed with spices, sights, & sounds that took us into another world.

Morocco

When you first enter the side streets with all the Souks (stalls), you are overwhelmed with the smells, the people, the hustle-bustle and the fact that you are in the middle of something that has been happening this very way for thousands of years. It brings tears to your eyes. It’s a cultural delight.

The spice Souks are AMAZING! Saffron, cumin, corriander and so much more. There are also a plethora of essential oils amber, musk, rose, argan and herbal remedies and cosmetics made from kohl, cochineal powder and henna.

Nightime in the Place Jemaa el Fna is not to be missed! Food stalls, snake charmers, musicians and plenty of ways to spend a few more dhirams. So culturally amazing, it has been designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations.

Daytime Gold

You would think that a gold skirt would be reserved for a nighttime look, but I’m surprised at how easy it is to dress it down. One of my new favorite skirts happens to be gold and I couldn’t wait for a holiday party to wear it, so I threw it on with a grey cashmere cardigan, a tee and my trusty Golden Goose booties. The key is to make sure, that if you’re going for a skirt, keep it on the longer side and wear flat shoes or boots.
