Shopping for Dreams

I love and support the Dream Foundation and last night, DIANI co-hosted a shopping event with the wonderful, Arlene Montesano with a portion of sales proceeds going to the Dream Foundation. It was a beautiful evening filled with generous, special people who all have two things in common: They love to give to the Dream Foundation AND they love to shop!

In the words of the Dream Foundation: “If you only had one year to live, what would your dream be? We are passionate about making dreams come true for adults suffering life-limiting illness, and in doing so – improving the quality of their lives in ways medicine alone cannot. Through this non-traditional, palliative form of healthcare, Dream Foundation provides those at the end of life’s journey with resolution, completion and peace.

Some dreamers long to make happy, lasting memories with their loved ones. Others want a friend brought to their bedside for a few final moments of comfort. And still others desire to take a trip they’ve always dreamed of. Dreams can be about leaving a legacy, such as a garden, or publishing a book of poetry… or receiving help with a utility bill, or a wheelchair ramp. There are no typical dreams. Dreams are as unique as the dreamers.

Go to www.dreamfoundation.org to learn more and see how you can get involved.

Thanks to Summerland Winery and Dining with Di for the delicious refreshments.

Beauty and the Bathroom

As the bf and I spend more time sharing a bathroom, it feels like a good time to start planning a bathroom remodel. Separate sinks equals happy couple. Know what I mean, ladies? Here are some of my current inspirations.

What I’m Wearing – Raising the Lines

Sometimes an outfit is made by simply playing with the length of the hem on a skirt or a pant, or, in this case, by mixing a super high waisted pant with a cropped jacket. Getting the proportions right is key.

Hearty Lentil Soup

Now that we finally have a little chill in the air and can throw some logs on the fire, it’s time for me to bust out my favorite lentil soup recipe. It’s so easy, so delicious, so healthy and so vegan.

1 cup lentils
1-2 carrots
1 large onion
3-4 cloves garlic
2 zucchini
1 ear  of corn
3 large shitake mushrooms
1 large handful string beans
1 tbsp white miso paste
1 bunch cilantro
4 cups water
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
salt & pepper

Put lentils in a large pan with 4 cups of water. Chop carrots, onion, zucchini, mushrooms, string beans, and garlic, cut corn off the ear, and add all to the pan. Bring water to a boil, and then cover and simmer for 45 minutes. Turn off heat, and add olive oil, lemon juice, cilantro, & miso paste, and stir thoroughly, until miso paste is dissolved. Season with salt & pepper to taste.

Optional Ingredients

1 loaf crusty bread for dipping
3 logs for cozy fire

Gone Shopping – LA Fashion Week

Before I head out for another day of buying at LA Fashion Week, I wanted to share what Elizabeth & James are up to for spring 2013. Their collection is such a well executed balance of clean and textural with an Indian flavor. I’m sold!

Seeing Double

On my recent flight back from Paris this month, I sat behind two gorgeous,  identical twin teenage girls. Their crazy, long, curly auburn hair is what made me look first and then it was their style, which is off-the-charts cool. If you don’t know about them yet, you will. Their names are Sama and Haya Abu Khadra and they’re based in Dubai but are being seen front and center at more and more runway shows around the world and are on many best dressed lists. You can see why these classic beauties are getting so much attention in the fashion world.

A Sunstone Winery Wedding

After touching down in LA from Paris Fashion Week, I drove up to Santa Ynez to be at the wedding of DIANI‘s beautiful Web and Media Manager, Whitney. The celebration was held at the breathtaking vineyard estate of Sunstone Winery. All the details of the day were perfection, from the mason glasses for the groom’s signature sangria, to the abundance of white hydrangea and lavender. Rosemary stems served as shrimp skewers, Crushcakes’s infamous bite size cupcakes made the perfect wedding cake, Pearl Jam’s “Hearts and Thoughts” for the bride and groom’s first dance, Valentino studded flat sandals to complement the elegant and dreamy lace and sequin embellished Manuel Mota gown. The newlyweds are now off to Italy for some more wine tasting and candlelit dining in the vineyards of Tuscany. Sigh.

Highlights from Paris Fashion Week

On the runways of Paris Fashion Week, some of the industry’s titans demonstrated that Spring 2013 is going to be more than bright prints, and pretty patterns. With an artful balance of feminine and masculine, ruffles and lace were accented with blazers and trousers, tailored to perfection. Power meets play.

From animal prints to stripes, winkle picker toes to chunky ankle straps and buckles, Paris Fashion Week showed us that your feet never take a back seat. These shoes are made to be the star of the show. Chloe and Marc Jacobs led the pack and here are some of my favorites, including some sites that can only be Paris.

Top row, Chloe shoes. Middle row, Marc Jacobs shoes and I’m wearing a Commes des Garcons cape trench, Velvet harem pants, Rag & Bone suede boots and Jerome Dreyfuss Albert bag. Second middle row, Chloe shoes. Bottom row, Chloe shoes.

Elvis visits Hawaii on the Runway of Isabel Marant

Only Isabel Marant could pull off such a crazy inspiration point, looking at old photographs of Elvis in his movie making days in Hawaii. What could come out of that combo that would be dream wardrobe worthy? Well, it’s Isabel after all, so, a lot. Her collection was heavily printed and embellished and devine! Here were my favorite looks on the runway and in person at their showroom today.

Oooh La La, Pedro Garcia!

Day one was a success! I’m so excited by the spring 2013 collection from Pedro Garcia. From the runway to the streets, kitten heels are making a comeback and Pedro Garcia offers up some patent nude pumps and sandals to give your legs a “go-on-forever” look. Instant wardrobe staples.

The wonderful Pedro Garcia duo, Andreas and Galia and highlights from their Spring 2013 collection. Loving the metal post kitten heels!

Look for the Day.

I’m obsessed with these Isabel Marant “Lori” pants. The perfect everyday pant with a not so everyday red stripe.

A common scene on the streets of Paris. You dress to impress! And, I’m so impressed that they walk with ease in sky high heels. So French! Now, I’m off to see Isabel Marant. Stay tuned!

Bonjour, mon ami, Paris.

There’s something hypnotic about Paris at dusk. The street lights, locals hitting the brasseries for a pre-dinner aperitif, the buzzing of vespas whizzing by. It’s all so energizing and I LOVE walking around at this time. Here are some shots I took tonight from the neighborhood I’ve been calling home during Paris Fashion Week for the last 10 years.

Hanii Y Cape – Perfect for fall. It gives you a little warmth, but lots of ventilation in the arms.

Rag & Bone sweater

And, not to be taken for granted, my trusty Leica camera. Perfect for snap shooting on the run.

The best chocolate chip and pecan cookie ever!

Tomorrow, the shopping begins! Standby for an update!

A San Francisco Wedding

Today, I head off to Paris for Fashion Week. And, I’m totally refreshed and inspired from a great weekend! I got to see one of my dear friends get married to her love in San Francisco. Nothing makes me happier than seeing two brilliantly talented and loving people find each other.

And, the best part was, San Francisco was sunny this weekend! No fog, no rain and no cool wind. It was glorious! After a decadent breakfast in bed, we jumped on the tram and headed straight to one of my favorite places, The Ferry Building to sample some of their gourmet treats. We stopped for lunch and bubbly at Ferry Plaza Seafood, sat back, relaxed (I don’t get to do that very often), as the sail boats drifted back and forth under the Bay Bridge. I was in heaven.

The wedding was held at the Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. A stunning location! After the ceremony, we were guided through the rain forests and had cocktails in the aquarium. What a treat to have a private viewing of all the amazing creatures!

Once back in Los Angeles, and before my flight to Paris, my BF and I had to hit the Hollywood Bowl for some Wilco under a full moon. It was the perfect end to a busy weekend!
